The Cypriot Academy supports creative initiatives that cherish Cypriot heritage, enhance the standing of the Cypriot community in the UK and beyond, and advance the cause of a truly free, peaceful and united Cyprus.
Three such creative initiatives that have been developed thus far are ‘The Cypriot collection’, ‘The Cypriot’ and Andrikos the fish-fryer.
‘The Cypriot collection’ is a CD of traditional Cypriot songs sung in English and with a fresh musical interpretation. The original lyrics have been carefully translated to make the songs accessible to a wider international audience.
‘The Cypriot’, a novel, recounts how Cyprus was tragically torn apart, offering hope that an enduring spirit exists in Cypriot hearts that can one day reunite the island. ‘The Cypriot’ has been published by Dexter Haven Publishing, an imprint of Black Spring Press.
Andrikos, one-time frying correspondent of the Parikiaki newspaper, first spouted the earthy wisdom, steeped in Cypriot heritage, that was eventually to inspire the formation of the Cypriot Academy and underpin its philosophy.
